On November 30th , 1376 a ship mastered by the Knights of Malta and carrying Pope Gregory XI to Rome after his Avignon captivity found shelter in this area during the raging of a storm. Following this event this area was named Santa Reparata later changed to Santa Liberata.
The Santa Liberata Channel is one of the two openings letting saltwater inside the West Lagoon where the Peschiera di Nassa is located.
