Originally that eight kilometres long stretch of sandy coast and pinewood separating the Tyrrhenian Sea from the west side of the lagoon was simply called Tombolo and was one of the preserves belonging to the Orbetello area. In the second half of the XVIII th century a few members from the Giannella Family begged to be allowed to cultivate parts of the Tombolo, thus giving it its current name.
In the twenties of last century the Giannella Tombolo had already become a well known tourist attraction and the Misses of the time were elected on its shore : the Queen and the Princesses from the sea.
